Advent Church in Ambon-Stad

Information: After a Japanese munitions depot was hit in an Allied attack on Tantoei on 15 February 1943, causing deaths, the interned civilian men and boys in the military encampment at Tantoei were transferred to the Advent Church of the Seventh Day Adventists in Ambon City. They were housed in the church and outbuildings, surrounded by barbed wire. A month later they were taken by the Rio de Janeiro Maru, a Japanese troop transport ship, to Makassar. The ship was followed by an Allied submarine, which did not engage because it was known that there were internees on board the Japanese carrier. Immediately after disembarkation the ship was torpedoed.
