Information: On January 31st 1942, approximately 500 civilian men, women, and children sought refuge in a shelter camp of six barracks of bamboo and atap which had been erected by the Dutch authorities in the partially thickly forested Batoegadjah river valley, about a kilometre southeast of the center of Ambon City. A small stone building was put to use as an infirmary. From 5 February the camp continued under Japanese control as an internment camp. At the end of February 1942 the approximately 400 “European” internees were taken to the STOVIL in Ambon City. A group of about 100 Chinese and other non-“European” civilians returned home.
