Sick boys and men from Camp Baros 5 were taken in at the Juliana Public Hospital on September 9th, 1945. Several days later medicines from Japanese warehouses became available. There was a massive shortage of nurses, because until the beginning of November nurses from the Netherlands were not admitted to the Indies. At the end of September the pemoedas claimed the hospital, with the result that Indonesian doctors got the best rooms and offices for caring for sick Indonesians. The Indonesian doctors left the hospital after Japanese military personnel quashed a pemoeda uprising on November 10th and did a clean-sweep of the city. A result of the uprising was that many residents from the surrounding area sought refuge in the hospital. Several weeks after the uprising, Gurkhas took guarding the hospital over from the Japanese and Japanese prisoners of war erected barricades around the hospital. A second uprising on 25 November sent residents of the area again fleeing to the hospital. They were housed in the hallways. The gas and electricity stopped, but it was possible to provision the hospital. At the end of November the center of Bandoeng was flooded due to heavy rainfall and the failure of a river dam. Convoys of refugees went to Tjihapit. At the end of January there were still 875 men, women and children in a hospital with a capacity for 600.
