Ambon City in Ambon-Stad

Town: Ambon-Stad
District: Ambon
Region: Moluccas
Location: Ambon-city is on Ambon Island, on the north coast of the southern peninsula of Leitimor, on Ambon Bay.
From 25 November 1943 to 09 October 1944 this location served as a prisoner of war camp >>
Internees: prisoners of war
Information: In Ambon City, from the end of 1943 several houses and other buildings were used as a transition camp for prisoners of war who were being brought back to Java after having been put to work in the East Indies. Due to Allied bombardment of Ambon City and intensive actions against Japanese shipping traffic, the last groups could not embark until September and October 1944. In these transports many prisoners of war lost their lives. Some of them ran aground in Raha on the island of Moena (southeast Celebes).
